Eliminating Racism & Discrimination

To achieve basic human rights — including the right to life, liberty, free speech, health, and education — we must address both historic and contemporary ways in which bias, racism, discrimination, and rising extremism are used to undermine them. Mindbridge applies the vast realm of psychology and neurobiological research to these ends.

KEY PROGRAM

The Implicit Bias Project (IBP)

The Implicit Bias Project (IBP) is a comprehensive training program that customizes change strategies for organizations, public sector groups (i.e. schools and communities), and government offices that seek to create more just and equitable environments. Our short and long-term training opportunities capitalize on neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change over time) to mitigate bias and discriminatory behavior.

Mindbridge’s educational model leverages the power of integrative capacity building. Our individualized offerings focus on linking awareness building directly to outcome, and provide organizations with the opportunity to:

  1. Redesign their original programming and outreach to create more equitable and inclusive strategies and/or

  2. Design original equity and human rights-based programming and outreach.

KEY PROGRAM

The Equity Implemenation Program

The Equity Implementation Program is designed to directly apply psychological and neurobiological research toward the active intervention of bias, racism, discrimination, dehumanization, and Othering in society. Mindbridge researchers and educators partner with government officials, nonprofit organizations, and/or community leaders in either a process of augmenting and/or redesigning previously existent programming, or the design of original programming toward those goals.

This integrative program is fluid and adaptable, with the goal of linking data to application in a way that meets the needs of each respective community. Equity implementation applications range in strategy and scope; some examples include:

  • Development of equity implementation plans for cities, in concert with their U.S.-based municipal leaders

  • Reconceptualization and redesign of torture mitigation programming in Asia

  • Establishment of best methods of promoting international law adherence during armed conflict

KEY PROGRAM

The Mindbridge Research Program

The Mindbridge Research Program is designed to address outstanding questions in anti-bias and anti-racism research. We supply novel avenues forward in promoting prosocial behavior and the elimination of inter-group violence, and keep an eye toward research design that is partner-based and integrative of regional needs and goals. Mindbridge’s interdisciplinary approach allows for two research foci to be undertaken per year by partnering with both outside labs, population-specific organizations, and community leaders.

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS:

  • The Rehumanization Campaign

    • This project supports human rights groups in their efforts to counter online hate speech through the development of marketing and social media content that promotes tolerance, empathy, and solidarity. Social media offers an unprecedented platform for disseminating hate speech, and can expose entire groups of people to overwhelming levels of dehumanizing rhetoric. This often lays the groundwork for atrocities and other human rights abuses to occur. However, social media can also be a powerful tool in “rehumanizing” by using psychology, neuroscience, and the latest research in communication to design and deliver positive, unifying stories to the social media feeds of specific audience segments.

U.S. FOCUS:

  • Addressing Hate: Assessing Attitudes and Awareness of Hate Crimes, Hate Speech, and Discrimination

    • This study seeks to understand public attitudes and awareness of:

      • the rights of minorities and vulnerable groups within the United States;

      • the occurrence and experience of discrimination, hate speech, and race-based violence;

      • orientation and affirmation of white nationalism and/or extremist ideologies;

      • and state legislation against discrimination, hate speech, and hate crimes.
